Pros & Cons of Game Pass

Pros of Game Pass
  • Can Play Multiple Games: You get instant access to a vast catalog of titles across multiple genres. You can try, download, and play many different games without having to pay for each one individually.
  • Cloud Gaming Available: For Ultimate tier subscribers, cloud gaming is fully available, enabling streaming to mobile, tablet, or lower-end PCs without needing native gaming hardware.
Cons of Game Pass
  • Don't Own the Game: If a game leaves the service, or if your subscription expires, you lose access to it. You are renting play time, not purchasing ownership.
  • Stuck with Game Pass: It often feels like you are stuck paying for the subscription continuously to play your favorite titles, unless you buy the games on discount.
  • Challenge of Save Games: If a game developer does not manage save games on their own dedicated servers, Xbox/Microsoft doesn't manage or guarantee save porting, so you manually have to back up and manage your save game files.
  • Most Games are Standard Versions: Subscriptions typically only offer standard/base versions of games. If you really like the game and want to play additional content or DLCs, you often have to purchase them separately, or buy the full game.
  • Formatted SSD Requirement: You need a properly formatted SSD to install and run games. Installed games cannot run properly on traditional HDDs or unformatted drives.
  • Cloud Gaming Hurdles: If you are a cloud gamer, you need an Xbox controller for most games, waiting times (queues) can occur, and data consumption is extremely high. While cloud gaming is not entirely bad and is decent overall, these challenges are notable drawbacks.

Our Verdict & Rating

We evaluate Game Pass India on our 100-point integer scale:

EGS Score
70

Our Rating for Xbox Game Pass: 70 / 100 (if you are okay with the cons)

Summary

If you have the money and are okay with not owning the games, or if you are comfortable maintaining the Game Pass subscription for a long time and currently own very few or no games, then it becomes highly worth buying. However, if you prefer ownership, dislike recurring fees, or want premium editions with included DLCs, purchasing games individually on deep sales remains the better option.

Value Scenarios

Scenario 1: Low Spender Gamer

If you are a low spender and are okay with not playing the latest game releases, in such a case, you should not buy it. It won't feel worth it to you since buying older titles on deep sales is far cheaper than paying a recurring fee.

Scenario 2: The Hybrid Model

If you are okay with using Game Pass as a massive playground to test games, but you can also buy a game separately if you like it, then it becomes highly worth it because you get access to a lot of games to play while retaining selective ownership.
