Things To Do Before the Gym

Sootopolis Gym

Gym Leader Juan specializes in Water-types. Electric and Grass attacks are highly effective, but watch out for Whiscash (immune to Electric!) and Kingdra (takes neutral damage from Grass and Electric).

Gym Puzzle: Cracked Ice Floors

What is the puzzle: The gym features three platforms made of cracked ice. Stepping on a tile cracks it. If you step on a cracked tile a second time, you fall into the basement filled with trainers. You must walk over every tile exactly once to unlock the stairs.

How to solve:

  • Platform 1: Start at the bottom, walk left, up, right, right, up, left, and up the stairs.
  • Platform 2: Start center, go left, left, up, up, right, down, right, right, down, right, up, up, left, left, and up.
  • Platform 3 (30 Tiles): Snake back and forth horizontally, ensuring you cover every edge and corner tile, ending at the center tile directly in front of the stairs.

  • Breloom: Grass/Fighting. Easily 1-shots Whiscash (4x weak to Grass) and dominates Crawdaunt and Sealeo with Fighting moves.
  • Magneton / Manectric: Electric attacks easily clear out Luvdisc, Sealeo, and Crawdaunt.
  • Dragon-type (Rayquaza / Altaria): Dragon Claw is super effective against Kingdra (who has no other weaknesses in Gen 3).
Rewards: The Rain Badge (All traded Pokémon will obey you, allows Waterfall outside of battle) and TM03 (Water Pulse).
