Why It Takes Two Won Game of the Year

It Takes Two made history by becoming the first strictly cooperative game to claim the Game of the Year crown at The Game Awards. Hazelight proved that game mechanics and emotional storytelling could intertwine seamlessly without relying on microtransactions, grinding, or repetitive gameplay loops.

1. Constant Mechanical Innovation & Variety

Virtually every single room and chapter gives Cody and May unique, complementary abilities—from hammer and nail synergies to gravity-shifting boots, time dials, magnetic poles, and flying mechanics. The game never repeated an idea, keeping players in a state of continuous delight.

2. Pure Co-Op Commitment & Friend's Pass

Hazelight's consumer-friendly "Friend's Pass" allowed one buyer to invite a partner to play the entire game for free online, removing barriers and fostering real-world human connection during a time when collaborative gaming was needed most.

3. Playful Minigames & High Production Values

Between emotional narrative milestones, the game scattered 25 competitive mini-games ranging from Whack-a-Mole and Chess to slot car racing, ensuring humor and dynamic fun were always at hand.
