Why Dragon Age: Inquisition Won Game of the Year

As the inaugural Game of the Year winner at the newly founded The Game Awards in 2014, Dragon Age: Inquisition captured the crown by combining epic scope, political leadership fantasy, and quintessential BioWare character storytelling in the Frostbite 3 engine.

1. Epic Leadership & Inquisitor Fantasy

Unlike traditional wanderer protagonists, players assumed the role of the Inquisitor, presiding over Skyhold fortress, deploying agents across the War Table, passing judgments on captured foes in the throne room, and shaping the political fate of Thedas.

2. Unforgettable Companion Dynamics & Romances

Companions like the enigmatic elven mage Solas, the Iron Bull, Dorian Pavus, Cassandra Pentaghast, and Varric Tethras delivered some of the most progressive, deeply written dialogues and personal loyalty quests of the 8th console generation.

3. Strategic Party Combat & High Dragon Encounters

Blending third-person action with the return of the overhead tactical camera allowed players to pause time, target vulnerable dragon limbs, assign spell combos across four party members, and coordinate complex battles against 10 unique High Dragons.
