Onimusha Leveling & Soul System Masterclass

How Soul Absorption, Magic Mirror Enhancements, Issen Multipliers, and Character Progression Function in Onimusha: Way of the Sword

Guides Hub Walkthrough Hub Main Hub
Unlike traditional RPGs that rely on numerical character levels (Level 1 to 99), Onimusha: Way of the Sword uses Capcom's iconic Oni Gauntlet Soul Siphon System. Character power is driven entirely by absorbing demonic souls in real-time combat and depositing them into elemental swords, mystical orbs, and the Oni Gauntlet at glowing Magic Mirrors.

1. The 4 Demonic Soul Types Explained

Whenever you decapitate or vanquish Genma enemies, glowing ethereal orbs erupt from their corpses. Holding the Gauntlet absorb button vacuums these souls directly into your relic:

Red Souls (Experience)

The primary currency of progression. Accumulated in the Oni Gauntlet and spent at Magic Mirrors to level up swords, elemental orbs, and Gauntlet vacuum speed.

Blue Souls (Magic Energy)

Instantly refills your Magic Gauge (MP). Enables you to cast Thunder, Flame, and Wind elemental spells without spending scarce magic potions.

Yellow Souls (Health Points)

Instantly restores lost Health Points (HP). Dropped frequently when executing high-skill Issen counters and downward finishing thrusts.

Purple Souls (Demon Form)

Rare primordial souls. Collecting 5 Purple Souls triggers the invincible Onimusha Demon Transformation for 20 seconds of pure destruction.

2. Magic Mirror Enhancement Mechanics

Magic Mirrors serve as both your primary save checkpoints and upgrade stations. Selecting the "Enhance" option opens the upgrade matrix where deposited Red Souls level up your arsenal:

Upgradeable Entity Level 1 → Level 2 Cost Level 2 → Level 3 Cost Gameplay Impact
Raizan (Thunder Katana) 2,000 Red Souls 5,000 Red Souls +35% Melee Damage, +1 Extra Magic Strike, Unlocks Lv2/Lv3 Blue Doors
Enryu (Flame Broadsword) 3,000 Red Souls 5,000 Red Souls +40% Melee Damage, +Cone Area of Fire, Unlocks Lv2/Lv3 Red Doors
Shippu (Wind Naginata) 3,500 Red Souls 5,000 Red Souls +30% Flurry Speed, Dual Cyclone Twisters, Unlocks Lv2/Lv3 Green Doors
Oni Gauntlet (Relic) 3,500 Red Souls 6,000 Red Souls Increases Soul Vacuum Speed by 60% & 120%; pulls souls through walls
Vital Progression Rule: Never leave one elemental orb behind at Level 1! High-tier areas in the West Fortress and Keep are locked behind Level 3 Demon Doors that demand all three orbs (Thunder, Flame, Wind) to be at Level 3.

3. Maximizing Soul Gains: The Issen Multiplier

Killing an enemy with standard katana slashes yields standard soul amounts (e.g. 50 Red Souls). However, landing frame-perfect counter strikes multiplies your soul yield exponentially:

Best Farming Location: The regenerating incubation vats in West Fortress Lab (Part 4). Killing 10 respawning Three-Eye Genma with Chain Issens yields over 15,000 Red Souls in under 4 minutes!

4. Permanent Health & Magic Stat Increases

Your Health (Vitality) and Magic (MP) gauges do not grow automatically from Red Souls. Instead, they are upgraded permanently through hidden relics:
