As you build your Legend in Ghost of Tsushima, you'll earn Technique Points that can be spent on various combat, stealth, and exploration skills. Choosing the right abilities early on will make your journey through Tsushima much smoother. Here are the most crucial skills you should prioritize unlocking first.
1. Samurai Techniques (Deflection & Evasion)
Your primary focus early in the game should be upgrading your defensive capabilities. Surviving combat is more important than flashy attacks early on.
Perfect Parry (Deflection)
- Why you need it: Unlocking the Perfect Parry allows you to counter enemy attacks just before they hit, dealing massive damage and generating significant Resolve. It turns a defensive maneuver into your most lethal offensive tool.
- Next step: After Perfect Parry, invest in Unyielding Sword Parry and Unyielding Spear Parry to deflect previously unblockable attacks.
Roll (Evasion)
- Why you need it: Standard dodging only moves you a short distance. The Roll technique allows you to completely evade large area-of-effect attacks and sweeping strikes from Brutes and spearmen. It is absolutely essential for avoiding damage when surrounded.
2. Ghost Techniques (Stealth & Tactics)
As Jin embraces the way of the Ghost, you gain access to powerful tools that can thin out enemy numbers before direct combat even begins.
Standoff Streak (Evolving Tactics)
- Why you need it: Standoffs are incredibly efficient for eliminating enemies instantly. Upgrading to a Standoff Streak allows you to take down two, and eventually three, enemies at the very start of a fight. This drastically reduces the difficulty of Mongol camps.
Safe Landing (Evolving Tactics)
- Why you need it: Tsushima is very vertical, and taking fall damage is common. Unlocking Safe Landing allows you to roll right before hitting the ground, negating fall damage from moderate heights. This makes exploration and stealth traversal much faster and safer.
Chain Assassination (Assassination)
- Why you need it: This allows you to quickly stealth-kill two enemies standing near each other before they can react. It is essential for clearing out outposts silently.
3. Stances
Stances dictate how effectively you can break an enemy's guard. You start with the Stone Stance (good against swordsmen), but you need to adapt quickly.
Water Stance
- Why you need it: Shield-bearing enemies are some of the most annoying foes in the early game. The Water Stance's heavy attacks will quickly stagger them, breaking their guard and leaving them open to fatal strikes. Observe and defeat Mongol leaders to unlock this stance as quickly as possible.
Summary Recommendation
For the optimal early-game build, spend your first 5-6 Technique Points on Perfect Parry, Roll, Safe Landing, and Standoff Streak. These skills provide the best balance of survival, exploration convenience, and lethality.
