This guide covers essential strategies for new players of Ghost of Tsushima on PC and PS5, including various quality-of-life adjustments, combat strategies, and resource management tips to significantly enhance your gameplay experience.
Key Gameplay & Quality of Life Tips
Combat Tactics
- Environmental Traps: You can ignite pampas grass with fire arrows to trap enemies in an inferno, making quick work of large groups.
- Standoff Mastery: When in a standoff, don't look at the enemy's weapon. Watch their feet. Strike when they physically step forward to guarantee a perfect response.
- Smoke Bomb Recovery: Use the Smoke Bomb technique that restores health upon use. Combining this with health-restoration charms allows you to easily sustain yourself during difficult fights.
- Resolve Management: If you are running low on resolve for healing or special abilities, prioritize finding wandering patrols for standoffs or completing bamboo strikes.
- Legendary Combat Arts: Obtain the Heavenly Strike (Act 1 region) and Dance of Wrath (Act 2 region) as early as possible. They significantly boost combat efficiency, and Dance of Wrath can even be used to quickly cross bodies of water!
Exploration
- Infinite Sprinting: When Jin runs out of breath, double-tap the circle (or dodge) button to perform a roll. This instantly refills your stamina gauge and allows you to sprint indefinitely.
- Audio/Visual Cues: Pay close attention to your surroundings. Listen for enemy archers shouting to their allies—this is your cue to dodge. Visually, follow yellow birds to discover new areas, foxes to find Inari shrines, and black bird swarms to locate haiku spots.
Settings & Customization
- Armor Loadouts: It is highly recommended to enable Armor Loadouts in the gameplay settings. This allows you to save specific charm setups for different armors, saving you from manually swapping charms every time you change gear.
- Bamboo Strike Accessibility: If you struggle with the bamboo strike mini-game, you can remove the button-press timer entirely by enabling the Accessibility option in the settings.
- Other Useful Settings: Enhance the guiding wind visibility for easier navigation, enable dark flash bomb effects to reduce eye strain, and adjust combat cues or controller schemes to fit your playstyle.
Resource Management & Upgrades
Farming Silk & Linen
- There are specific, reliable locations to farm crucial upgrade materials using a reload-from-checkpoint trick:
- Silk: Can be farmed efficiently in Yaga Forest (3:32).
- Linen: Can be found consistently west of the Golden Temple (4:26).
Shrines & Charms
- Inari Shrines: Continuing to visit Inari Shrines beyond simply unlocking charm slots will reward you with incredibly powerful unique charms, such as the Charm of Inari's Might and the Charm of Silence. Don't ignore foxes once your slots are full!
- Recommended Early Charms: Equip defensive charms that restore health upon killing enemies and improve parry/dodge windows. These essential charms can be found early at the Spring Falls Shrine and Golden Summit Shrine.
Trading & Economics
- Surplus Resources: You can trade surplus bamboo to Trappers in exchange for supplies. Alternatively, you can purchase gold from them to upgrade your Katana quickly and efficiently (5:32).
Progressing Through the Game
Iki Island DLC
- It is strongly recommended to head to Iki Island early in Act 2. By doing so, you can acquire the incredibly powerful Sarugami Armor and the Charm of Versatile Skills. These items significantly improve your gameplay efficiency and combat capabilities for the rest of the base game (6:41).
New Game Plus
- Before starting a new playthrough in New Game Plus (NG+), players are highly encouraged to complete all remaining activities and collect as many resources as possible to maximize their collection of Ghost Flowers (the unique currency used in NG+) (9:18).
