In Ghost of Tsushima, leveling up is tied to your "Legend." As you grow your Legend, you earn Technique Points to unlock new skills, stances, and Ghost weapons. Increasing your health and resolve is tied to exploration. Here is the best way to level up quickly and efficiently.
1. Complete Tales (Quests)
The most substantial way to increase your Legend is by completing quests across Tsushima.
- Jin's Journey (Main Story Tales): These gold-colored icons provide massive boosts to your Legend meter. Progressing through the story is the fastest way to earn multiple Technique Points.
- Mythic Tales: Marked in blue, these tales not only give a good amount of Legend XP but also unlock incredibly powerful combat arts and legendary armors (like the Heavenly Strike or the Gosaku Armor).
- Tales of Tsushima (Side Quests): The silver/grey icons represent side quests. While they offer slightly less XP than main quests, there are many of them, and completing them adds up quickly. They also provide valuable resources and charms.
2. Liberate Mongol Territories
As you explore, you will find Mongol camps, outposts, and occupied farms (marked as red icons on the map).
- Clearing Camps: Defeating all enemies and completing the bonus objectives (like "Assassinate 3 enemies" or "Stagger 5 enemies") will reward you with a significant bump to your Legend meter.
- Observing Leaders: Before killing a Mongol Leader at a camp, try to observe them from stealth first. You get a stance progress point for observing, and another point for killing them, effectively doubling your progress toward unlocking new combat stances.
3. Increase Health and Resolve (Exploration)
Technique points don't increase your raw stats. To increase your maximum Health and Resolve (used for healing and special attacks), you must explore the open world.
- Hot Springs (Health): Look for trees with yellow leaves or follow Golden Birds. Resting at a Hot Spring permanently increases your maximum health.
- Bamboo Strikes (Resolve): Complete the mini-game at Bamboo Strikes to increase your maximum Resolve, allowing you to heal more often and use Mythic attacks frequently.
- Inari Shrines (Fox Dens): Follow foxes to their shrines to unlock more Minor Charm slots, which allow you to equip passive buffs to enhance your build.
4. Random Encounters
While exploring the roads of Tsushima, you will frequently run into Mongol patrols holding peasants hostage.
- Save Hostages: Defeating the patrol and saving the peasant will grant a small amount of Legend XP. It might seem insignificant, but these encounters happen so often that completing them consistently will result in extra Technique Points over time.
5. Recommended Early Game Skills
When you start getting Technique Points, invest them wisely to make future combat and leveling easier:
- Deflection (Perfect Parry): Crucial for surviving combat and opening up enemies to counterattacks.
- Evasion (Roll): Essential for avoiding unblockable attacks from Brutes and spearmen.
- Standoff Streak: Upgrading your standoff allows you to instantly kill up to three enemies at the start of an encounter, making clearing camps much faster.
